Chi è Patrick Zaki.
Un breve riassunto della sua storia, a cura del Gruppo Giovani 089 Bologna di Amnesty International, che ringraziamo.
Patrick George Zaki è uno studente egiziano, trasferitosi a Bologna nel settembre 2019 per frequentare il master Gemma.
Nella notte tra il 6 e 7 febbraio 2020 viene catturato dai servizi segreti egiziani appena atterrato all’aeroporto del Cairo, di ritorno da Bologna per una visita ai familiari. Per 24 ore non si saprà nulla di lui.
In quel giorno di vuoto, durante un interrogatorio di 17 ore, lo studente bendato e ammanettato è vittima di torture con percosse e scosse elettriche. Gli agenti della NSA lo interrogarono sul suo impegno in difesa dei diritti umani durante il suo soggiorno in Egitto e sui suoi studi a Bologna.
L’8 febbraio viene trasferito nel carcere di Tora, dove si trovano diverse centinaia di prigionieri di coscienza. Dopo vari rinvii, le prime udienze si sono tengono solo a luglio. Nella seconda, risalente al 26 luglio, Patrick Zaki ha potuto vedere per la prima volta i suoi avvocati dal 7marzo.
Solo il 25 agosto 2020 Patrick ha potuto vedere per un breve colloquio la madre. Fino ad allora la famiglia aveva ricevuto da Patrick solo due brevi lettere a fronte delle almeno 20 che lo studente aveva scritto ed inviato.
Il 26 settembre, a seguito di una nuova udienza, il tribunale ha deciso un ulteriore rinvio. Il 7 dicembre 2020 il giudice della sezione antiterrorismo del tribunale del Cairo ha annunciato il rinnovo per 45 giorni della custodia cautelare dello studente in carcere ormai quasi da un anno.
Da qui in poi, inizieranno una sequela di rinnovi, ogni volta di 45 giorni l’uno, con l’intento di far cadere nell’oblio la storia di Patrick Zaki, che rischia fino a 25 anni di galera. Le accuse che gli sono state mosse sono di diffusione di notizie false, incitamento alle proteste illegali, sovversione e propaganda per il terrorismo.
Il 9 settembre 2021 si conclude un nuovo interrogatorio per Patrick che verrà rinviato a giudizio pochi giorni dopo con l’accusa di aver diffuso “informazioni false” tramite un suo scritto del 2019 in cui denunciava le discriminazioni subite dai cristiani copti in Egitto, minoranza di cui lui stesso fa parte.
Il 14 settembre Patrick Zaki appare ammanettato in aula e l’udienza dura appena 5 minuti, il tempo necessario per chiedere l’accesso al fascicolo del caso e un rinvio per poterlo studiare. Nonostante le paure per una sentenza lampo, i giudici acconsentono alle richieste della difesa e aggiornano l’udienza al 28 settembre.
Quest’ultima udienza dura solo 2 minuti: la difesa chiede un ulteriore rinvio per approfondire il caso e la corte decide per un rinvio al 7 dicembre.
Il portavoce di Amnesty Italia commenterà il fatto definendolo un “rinvio che sa di punizione”.
Il 7 dicembre 2021, l’udienza è stata sospesa dopo soli 4 minuti, per decidere sulla richiesta della legale di Zaki Hoda Nasrallah, che ha chiesto l’acquisizione di altri atti e filmati per dimostrare sia una illegalità durante dell’arresto, avvenuto il 7 febbraio 2020 all’aeroporto del Cairo (e non altrove come falsamente affermato) e che gli scritti di Zaki circa le persecuzioni nei confronti dei Copti si basano su fatti realmente accaduti e non sono frutto delle menzogne imputate al ragazzo.
Rientrando in aula, la Corte ha deciso – finalmente! – per la scarcerazione di Patrick, anche se permangono a suo carico le accuse per le quali il processo è stato rinviato al 1 febbraio 2022.

Chi è Patrick Zaki.
A brief summary of its history, by Amnesty International Youth Group 089 Bologna, which we thank.
Patrick George Zaki is an Egyptian student, he moved to Bologna in September 2019 to attend the Gemma master.
The night between the 6th and the 7th of February 2020 he has been captured by the egyptian secret service, as soon as landed into Cairo airport since he was returning for a family reunion.
For the next 24 hours there will be no sign or trace of him.
During that day, after a 17 hours interrogation, the student blindfolded and handcuffed is tortured, beated and electrically shocked. The agents of the NSA questioned him about his committment and efforts for human rights during his stay in Egypt and about his studies in Bologna.
The 8th of February he’s transferred to prison in Tora, where hundreds of Prisoners of Conscience are deteined. After several postponements, the firsts hearings been held only in July. In the second one, held the 26 of July, Patrick Zaki has been able to see his lawyers for the first time since the 7 of March.
Only on August 25 of 2020 Patrick could meet the mother for a brief meet up. Until then, the family recieved only two of the over 20 letters that Patrick wrote and sent during the captivity.
The 26 of September, following a new hearing, the court opted for a new postponement. The 7th of December 2020, the judge of anti-terrorist section of Cairo’s tribunal renewed the pre-trial detention for 45 more days for the student, in jail for almost one year already.
Since then, a series of renewals begin, each one of then of 45 days, with the solely purpose of loosing the tracks of Patrcik’s story. He risks at least 25 years in jail. The accusations that have been brought against him are: spreading of false news, inciting illegal protests, subversion and terroristic propaganda.
On the 9 of September 2021 a new interrogation ends and Patrick will be sent to trial few days later, accused of spreading false news via one of his writes of 2019, where he denounced the discrimination suffered by the coptic christians in Egypt, minority of which himself belongs to.
The 14 of September Patrick Zaki appears in court handcuffed and the hearing lasts for just about 5 minutes, the time needed to request the acces to his dossier for further studyings. For the defens the fear was a sommary and quick sentence from the judges but, in the end, they accepted the request, postponing the hearing to the 28 of September.
The court hearing lasts 2 minutes only. The defense asks for a further postponement to investigate the case and the court decides for the 7th of December.
Amnesty International’s italian spokesperson will declare “A renewal that tastes more like a punishment!”.
The 7th of December 2021 the hearing lasts roughly 4 minutes only, to decide on Patrick’s lawyer, Zaki Hoda Nasrallah, request. She requested the acquisition of more proceedings and videos of the arrest of Patrick, to check on the suspected illegality of the arrest occured in Cairo, back on the 7 of February 2020 (and not elsewhere as falsy stated by egyptian authorities) and also to prove that what written by Zaki about the copt christians is true and actual and not faked as stated by the prosecution.
Once back in courtroom, the judges – finally- deliberated for the release of Patrick, even if the charges against him remain in place and the trial has been postponed for the 1st of February 2022.
